This highly urbanized city has released PHP5.62 million in cash assistance to 936 eligible solo parents under the local government’s Solo Parent Welfare Program.

Data from the city’s Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) on Friday showed each beneficiary received PHP6,000, covering the period January to June this year.

“The group who received the cash assistance on Thursday represents the first batch of the beneficiaries for 2025. An additional 564 solo parents are undergoing validation for the next distribution,” DSSD head Richelle Verdeprado-Mangga said in a statement.

In March, 521 solo parents received PHP12,000 each in cash assistance for 2024.

“Under the leadership of Mayor Greg Gasataya, the city government remains committed to supporting solo parents. Financial aid is provided to qualified solo parents, following careful assessment and orientation. Eligibility is re-evaluated annually,” she said.

This year, the city has allocated PHP18 million for the Solo Parent Welfare Program in support of the full implementation of Republic Act 11861, or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act.

“More than assistance, we are building an empowered, supportive community where solo parents can thrive and feel that they are not alone,” Mangga said.

The Solo Parent Welfare Program is aligned with the initiatives of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, which recognizes solo parents raising children on their own due to various circumstances.

Under the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, beneficiaries are entitled to financial aid, educational support, and access to social protection programs. (PNA)
