President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday expressed confidence in the country’s future, saying the Philippines is “in good hands” as he urged young Filipinos to lead with excellence, integrity, and compassion, during the 2025 Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards at Malacañang Palace.

In a message delivered by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto during the awarding ceremony in Kalayaan Hall, Marcos said the awardees embody a new generation of leaders driven by service and purpose.

“Through your work, and more importantly, the impact you have created, I am confident that the Philippines is in good hands,” Marcos said in his message.

He noted that since its establishment in 1959, the TOYM Awards have stood as proof that leadership and excellence are not limited by age.

“Since its establishment in 1959, the Outstanding Young Men and Women TOYM Awards has become a reminder that age is never a barrier to excellence,” he said.

The President cited the awardees’ contributions across law, environmental protection, science, and climate advocacy, recognizing their role in addressing national and global challenges.

He commended lawyer Raymond Baguilat for defending the rights of indigenous peoples and ensuring their inclusion in legal and educational systems; Rafael Dionisio for working with Aeta communities in Zambales to restore forests while building sustainable livelihoods; and Dr. John Jamir Benzon Aruta for pioneering research linking climate change and mental health, particularly in the Global South.

Marcos also recognized Dr. Deo Florence Onda, the first Filipino to reach the Emden Deep, the world’s third deepest point, for leading scientific expeditions in the West Philippine Sea and advancing research on marine plastic pollution and microbial ecology.

“Each of you truly proves that leadership demands a deep sense of purpose,” Marcos said.

He called on the awardees to continue leading with integrity and compassion, and challenged young Filipinos to follow their example.

“Excellence becomes possible when we choose to use our talents in the service of others,” Marcos said. (PNA)
