  • TNB’s Green Electricity Tariff (GET) extended to up to 285 McDonald’s restaurants
  • GSPARX Sdn Bhd, a TNB subsidiary, will develop, operate and maintain the rooftop solar systems
  • Rooftop solar implementation expected to begin in 2026 and complete by 2027
  • First TNB Electron EV charging facility in the F&B sector opened at McDonald’s Batu Kawan Drive Thru in Penang
  • Batu Kawan charger is a 200kW DC fast charger with two charging points, expandable to four, energised May 15, 2026
  • Additional TNB Electron installations planned at other McDonald’s locations nationwide, sites and timelines not yet confirmed
  • Partnership cited as supporting the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2.0, and Penang’s Energy Framework

McDonald’s Malaysia and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said Friday they are expanding their clean energy partnership across three fronts: rooftop solar, a green electricity tariff, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The expansion adds 51 McDonald’s restaurants to the rooftop solar program under TNB’s Supply Agreement with Renewable Energy (SARE) framework, with a combined capacity of 1.685 MWp.

GSPARX Sdn Bhd, TNB’s renewable energy subsidiary, will develop, operate and maintain the new rooftop systems. Implementation is expected to begin in 2026, with completion targeted for 2027.

Separately, TNB’s Green Electricity Tariff, which allows commercial customers to source electricity certified as renewable, will now cover up to 285 McDonald’s restaurants. The companies also highlighted a new EV charging milestone: a TNB Electron facility at the McDonald’s Batu Kawan Drive Thru in Penang, described as the first TNB Electron installation in the food and beverage sector. The facility features a 200kW DC fast charger with two charging points, expandable to four, and was energised on May 15, 2026. Additional TNB Electron facilities are planned at other McDonald’s restaurants nationwide, though specific locations and timelines have not been confirmed.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow attended the unveiling of the Batu Kawan charging facility, saying private sector participation is essential to advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency in the state. The companies framed the partnership as contributing to Malaysia’s broader energy transition goals under the NETR and the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2.0, as well as Penang’s own energy framework.

Public reporting on the announcement is limited to company and outlet statements issued around the August 21 announcement; independent financial or technical assessment of the expanded partnership was not available at time of publication.
